HEALTH SCARE
and how to deal with one

Three recent experiences have deeply impacted me, serving as stark reminders of life's uncertainties and the importance of health and preparedness.
a. Discovering polyps in my colon after a routine scope in 2022 was a shock. Thoughts raced through my mind, echoing the phrase "The apple never falls far from the tree." Would I face the same health struggles as my mother? Fueled by anxiety, I swiftly increased my insurance coverage, recognizing the unpredictability of health challenges, especially in my line of work.
b. Witnessing a close friend battle an unexpected insect bite infection was alarming. Initially dismissed, the situation escalated when doctors had to surgically intervene, drilling a 2-3cm hole to address the severe infection. The fear of potential amputation loomed over us, highlighting the fragility of health and the importance of swift medical attention.
c. My wife's sudden hospitalization due to a severe kidney infection and pneumonia was a terrifying ordeal. Eight days of uncertainty, compounded by episodes of severe shortness of breath, tested our resilience. When she mustered her strength to speak, she whispered her concerns about doing up her insurance nomination forms.
In moments like these, emotions run high, and tears often seem inevitable. Yet, amidst the turmoil, gratitude for good health today prevails. It was all a health scare. Phew.
Dealing with health scares can be a challenging and stressful experience, but there are steps you can take to manage the situation effectively:
Stay Calm: Maintaining composure amidst the chaos is paramount
Consult a Healthcare Professional: Maintaining Seeking expert guidance and second opinion offers reassurance and ensures informed decision making, avoiding the pitfalls of self-diagnosis via “Doctor Google”. Because everything points to cancer and causes unnecessary anxiety.
Follow Medical Advice: Listen to the advice and recommendations of your healthcare provider. This may include undergoing further tests, starting a treatment plan, or making lifestyle changes to improve your health. Also, do it promptly.
Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or support groups for emotional support. Sharing your concerns with others can provide reassurance during a difficult time.
Consider Counseling: If you find yourself struggling to cope with anxiety or fear related to your health scare, consider seeking support from a mental health professional.
Insurance: Prioritizing comprehensive hospitalization insurance coverage mitigates financial worries during health crises, allowing focus on recovery rather than monetary concerns
When faced with a health scare, we often find ourselves embarking on a journey of introspection, pondering the intricacies of life, faith, and connections with loved ones. In my journey as a devoted family man navigating a demanding career, two profound realizations emerged, perhaps it may resonate with you.
Legacy and Contribution: My wife and I found ourselves grappling with the desire to ensure our family's financial security, the only thing we could control was to ease the financial burden so that the rest of us could deal with the emotional burden better.
Our relentless pursuit of personal growth and provision for our loved ones via our careers suddenly took on heightened significance. The mere thought of my son and wife facing the same trials I endured with my parents' illnesses filled me with an ache.
We wanted clear and precise designation of our estate to the right people so that we could have peace of mind. Not forgetting the lasting power of attorney, where we can appoint someone to make decisions and act on our behalf if we lose our mental capacity.
Preparing Loved Ones: Practical preparations become important when confronted with the reality of mortality. Initiating conversations, making arrangements, and articulating final wishes all become acts of profound love and consideration.
I recently joked with a friend of mine that if he passed on, could I have his racing simulator set up. I am glad that I have a place in his heart <3
My wife and I found ourselves expressing our love tenfold during that horrifying 8 days of hospitalization, recognizing the preciousness of each moment together.
It was a poignant reminder to cherish and nurture the bonds that sustain us, especially in times of adversity. Truth is, this should be done, practiced, and experienced daily, not only at the hospital. We do not need a health scare to trigger this.
In the crucible of a health scare, these reflections on legacy and preparation for our loved ones' well-being transcend mere practicality; they embody our deepest aspirations and expressions of love.
As we navigate the complexities of life, I hope you find solace should you be met with a health scare in the future and be a little more prepared for one. Perhaps the first few things you can start to think about are:
Is my hospitalization coverage sufficient?
How should my estate be paid out?
Am I cherishing the relationship I have with my loved ones today?
Cheers to great health!
